Annual DD Chili Fest
March
of every year at Dawson Bryant High School – Coal Grove, Ohio
Our Chapter Donates
to this event by renting a table booth, decorating it in our
NWTF style and serving over 1,000 samples of Chili made by our
Committee members .
We hand out flyers to all that attend this event to let them
know who we are and about all of our events each year.
All money raised for this event goes to support the
Lawrence County Ohio Board of DD Organization and to raise
awareness of DD in our community.
Lawrence County Fair
July
each year during fair week – Lawrence County Fair Grounds –
Proctorville, Ohio
Our Chapter rents a
booth during the week of the fair in an air conditioned building
and we hand out chapter flyers about our event information.
We share this booth with some of our partners, Ohio
Division of Wildlife, USDA Wayne National Forest, Special Needs
Youth Sportsmen, Inc. and Symmes Creek Restoration Committee.
JAKES TAKE AIM
TRAILER
We also, set up the
JAKES Take Aim Trailer (Portable BB Gun Range) during the
evenings the week of the fair.
This provides an opportunity for our youth to be educated
on the safety of properly shooting and handling of a BB gun.
Our chapter committee members instruct and operate this
range. The Ohio State NWTF has three of these JAKES Take Aim
trailers. The trailers were donated to Ohio NWTF by Larry and
Brenda Potterfield of Midway USA.
HUNTER’S EDUCATION COURSES
Starting in February of 2017 our chapter will host a Hunter’s
Education Course once a year.
Our chapter has four certified Instructors and will host
one class in February every year.
Anyone interested in participating in the Ohio Hunter’s
Education Course hosted by our chapter should observe this web
site or follow us on Facebook for all future details, class
dates, times and locations.
Anyone interested in the Ohio Hunter’s Education Class must
register online at Ohio Division of Wildlife Website.
We have provided a shortcut to this site at the bottom of
each web page on our site.

TURKEY HUNTER'S CARE PROGRAM
Our Chapter is planning on raising the spirits of needy families in the community by taking part in the out reach program started by the NWTF called Turkey Hunters Care Program, where we will provide frozen turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to needy families in Lawrence County Ohio.
We believe during the holidays “Family is the focus for many during the holiday season. We can help less fortunate families enjoy time with each other by eliminating some of their worries,”.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Our
chapter presents two scholarships each year in the amount of
$500 each to two high school seniors that are enrolled in high
schools in Lawrence County.
The first
scholarship is named is named “In Loving Memory of Levon
Kingrey” who was one of the first avid turkey hunters in
Lawrence County who harvested a turkey in our county many years
ago. This
scholarship was started in his memory by his son, and long-time
committee member, past State NWTF Board member and past chapter
president, Larry Kingrey.
The second
scholarship is named “In Loving Memory of Fred Pernestti” who
was one of our chapters first Wheelin’ Sportsmen members who
participated in our fall hunt each year. This scholarship was
started in his memory by his son, and long-time Committee
member, current Banquet Chairman and Chapter President Larry
Pernestti and his mother Phyllis Pernestti.
Both Scholarships
are announced for applicants in late November each year and are
given to each high school Guidance Counselor to distribute.
The application deadline for these scholarships is
January 1st every year so that the Scholarship
Committee may review and score them to determine the two
winners. The winners
will be announced and one winner’s scholarship packet will be
forwarded to the Ohio State NWTF Board to be reviewed and to be
eligible for the $1,000 state scholarship given out in February
each year. The State $1,000 winner will then be forwarded to
Edgefield, SC and eligible for National Scholarship award for
$10,000 to be awarded in May.
Any high school
senior that is enrolled and lives in Lawrence County Ohio must
ask your Guidance Counselor for details on the NWTF Local
Chapter Scholarship Application.
All applications must be submitted to South Hills Chapter Scholarship Committee member listed on the application. The appropriate address to be mailed will be included in the scholarship packet.
