2009 News
Saturday, May 2nd saw jason Spillman of Wheelersburg, Ohio
become the first repeat winner of the 2009 season at Lunbeck
Speedway as he scored the win in the "Buckeye Spring Classic"
which had been rained out in April. Track crews had worked
through the night to get the track in shape after heavy rains
all week had forced most area tracks to cancel their weekend
activities.
The heavy rains made for some real excitement in time trials.
The first kart out of the gate was the #33M of Tyler Roush who
set a track record with a 7.39 clocking. It was short lived
though, as 3rd kart out was the #51 of Spillman who lowered
the mark to a 7.37. Then, off in the distance, some fans said
they swore they could hear black sabbath as the Lunbeck
Ironman pulled onto the track. Scott Salyers reeled off a lap
that nearly tore the flesh from his skin setting a new
official Lunbeck record of 7.27 seconds!!
The heat races saw an inversion of "4". The heats were 8
lappers with the top 2 in each heat going to the dash. John W.
Roush led the first heat to green but outside polesitter Troy
Uhrig got the jump at the start and never looked back. Salyers
was able to move up through the pack from 4th to 2nd, but was
no match for Uhrig in the short heat race. Tyler Roush and
John W. Roush were 3rd and 4th.
The second heat was brought to green by Brandon Throckmorton
on his new #11B, but once again, it was the outside pole kart
grabbing the top spot early. It was John Roush who led with
Jason Spillman quickly moving from 4th to 2nd. With a lap to
go, Spillman made his move to claim the lead. Then, entering
turn #3, John Roush made a last ditch effort to reclaim the
lead with a bonzai throw of the kart into turn 3, but he
hopped over the right rear of Spillman allowing Rob Roush to
sneak through and claim the 2nd spot and the transfer to the
dash!
The dash saw the coin flip dictate a "heads up" start putting
fast timer Scott Salyers on the pole with Spillman alongside.
Salyers grabbed the early lead, but Spillman closed the gap
and made it 2 for 2 on the day with last lap passes for the
win as he squeezed by Salyers entering turn 1 with a lap
remaining. Salyers held on for secons with Rob Roush and Troy
Uhrig rounding out the dash finish,
The B-main event was led from the start by Tyler Roush and he
appeared headed for certain victory. But in turn 3 of the last
lap, mechanical issues saw the #33M coasting home and the
elder statesman of the LKA, Mr John Roush swept by on the
outside to claim the popular win. Tyler coasted hom 2nd just
ahead of the fast closing John W Roush in #77.
Next up was the 30 lap "Buckeye Spring Classic". The trademark
of Lunbeck is the "pill draw" for the inversion and fans were
once again treated to a "6" inversion. This put new track
record holder Scott Salyers and dash winner jason Spillman
back in row #3. Tyler Roush and John Roush paced the field to
guest starter Jim Roseberry's green flag. Tyler Roush got out
to the early lead with John Roush in tow. Back in the pack,
Troy Uhrig was forced out into the grass allowing the Spillman/Salyers
tandem to get by him and Rob Roush as they began their charge
to the front.
The first caution of the event flew working lap #3 as John
Roush spun out of second place. This put Salyers and Spillman
up to 2nd and 3rd with only 2 laps officially in the books. On
the restart, Tyler Roush continued to show the way until
working lap #5, he spun while leading, doing a 360 spin
through the infield and continuing without causing a caution.
Suddenly, Salyers found himself with the lead completing lap
#5 with Jason Spillman rapidly closing. John Roush was first
to exit the speedway quickly followed by Brandon Throckmorton
who was fighting handling problems with the new kart. Spillman
had caught Salyers and appeared to be waiting for the right
moment. Then disaster struck for Salyers.
Working lap #22, the #71c Conley Trucking kart of Salyers
broke a chain on the backstretch. The errant chain got outside
the chainguard doing moderate damage to both the kart and the
driver. The race was red flagged as the Lunbeck track EMT
tended to the Ironman. After being hauled from the track,
Salyers was treated for cuts and abrasions and checked for
head injuries. we are glad to report that there were no life
threatening injuries and the head injuries was a pre-existing
condition.
When action resumed, Jason Spillman appeared in full command.
Despite a broken throttle pedal, the #51 kart cruised to the
win. Tyler Roush made a late race pass on Troy Uhrig to claim
the #2 spot as Uhrig, John W. Roush and Rob Roush completed
the top 5.
The next event at Lunbeck will be on Thursday night, May 14th
as the LKA brings back a racing icon of the past from ESPN
with the return of "Thursday Night Thunder". Racing action
will begin at 7pm. Hope to see everyone out Thursday night!!
A beautiful sunny day, that border lined HOT, greeted racers and
fans alike for the 2nd running of the Miniscule event at Lunbeck
Speedway. Lee "The Rim Rider" Glatting set the pace in time
trials with a 7.75 clocking narrowly edging out the senior
member of the LKA, John Roush who turned a 7.85.
With heat races lined straight up, this put Glatting on the
front row of heat #1 alongside Troy Uhrig. The day got off to a
rough start as the first 3 attempts to get underway were waved
off, so the heat was finally started single file! Glatting got
the early lead and led through lap #4 when he got a little wide
off turn 4 leaving the door open for Uhrig to sneak through and
take the lead. Then, off turn #2, Glatting got sideways again,
losing several more spots! At the finish, it was Uhrig followed
by Josh Fox, Sean Lehman, John Wayne Roush, Glatting, and Ty
Roush.
The 2nd heat race was brought to green with John Roush and Jason
Spillman on the front row. Spillman got a fantastic start in an
attempt to grab the early lead, but the scrappy "Uncle Roush"
held his ground and the pair raced side by side a full lap
before Spillman got a little too high and loose and had to
settle into the runner-up spot. He soon tracked down the elder
Roush and attempted a pass off turn 2, but once again, Spillman
learned not to mess with your elders as Uncle Roush stood his
ground and Spillman spun to a stop. This left Rob Roush as the
lone challenger for the lead and his kart was coming on strong
as he made it a great race over the final circuits, but "Uncle"
John Roush held on to post the win followed by Rob Roush, Jason
Spillman (in a photo finish), over Scott Salyers and Brandon
Throkmorton.
The top 3 from each heat were then entered into the dash which
was lined up inverted from time trials. Rob Roush and Sean
Lehman brought the field to the green flag and Roush set sail
with the early lead in his #25. He appeared to be on a rail and
headed for certain victory, but the rapidly drying Lunbeck
surface may have contributed to Roush getting very loose off
turn 4 with 2 laps to go, allowing Jason Spillman to get by on
the outside heading into turn #1. The hard luck guy of the dash
may have been Sean Lehman though who from his outside pole spot,
became the proverbial pinball of the dash, and after getting
kocked around by nearly every kart on the start, Lehman found
himself on the tail but was able to get back to 5th before the
checkered flag fell. At the finish it was Spillman, Rob Roush,
Troy Uhrig, Josh Fox, Lehman, and John Roush.
The B-Main is always an exciting event and this one was no
exception. Brandon Throkmorton and Lee Glatting both scratched
from the event leaving just a field of 3. But despite the short
field, the race was tall on excitement. John Wayne Roush and
Scott Salyers led the field to green with Salyers grabbing the
lead on the start, but Roush was able to overtake the point off
turn 2. Salyers stayed glued onto the bumper of the #77 as Tyler
Roush lurked to Salyers' outside almost the entire distance.
John Wayne Roush would hold on for the win but you could throw a
blanket over the winner and Salyers and Ty Roush who would round
out the finish!
Finally it was A-main time. Ten karts reported to the
frontstretch for driver introductions to another standing room
only Lunbeck crowd (still no bleachers yet so everyone was
standing). The "6" pill was pulled from the hat inverting the
dash finish completely and putting John Roush and Sean Lehman on
the front row. Lee Glatting had scratched from the B-main and
hired a replacement driver in track owner/promoter Aaron Fry who
would start scratch on the field. After one false start, the 30
lap Miniscule grind was underway. John Roush grabbed the early
lead with Sean Lehman having a great run in 2nd place early on.
Meanwhile, back in the pack, the #33 Glatting machine was on a
rail early and was from 10th to 8th working the high side on lap
1. A lap #3 caution would fly as Lehman looped it off turn #2.
At this point the running order was John Roush, Spillman, Rob
Roush, Josh Fox, Aaron Fry, Scott Salyers, Troy Uhrig, John
Wayne Roush, Ty Roush, and Lehman being sent to the tail.
On the restart, action was everywhere! Fox got into the back of
Rob Roush sending both karts high in turn 2 and allowing the #33
of Fry to get past both to take the 3rd spot! Meanwhile, up
ahead, John Roush pushed a little wide off turn 4 letting Jason
Spillman by for the lead! A lap later, Roush pushed again off
turn 4 allowing Aaron Fry to slip into the runner-up spot on lap
#5 after starting 10th. Scott Salyers and John Wayne Roush got
together bringing out a caution working lap #6. Ty Roush brought
out a caution om the first restart attempt.
A great battle was shaping up on the point with Spillman showing
the way, but a fast closing #33 kart that had come from the tail
to 2nd in only 5 laps! The overflow Lunbeck crowd was on their
feet in anticipation of the current Wheelersburg Speedway
dominator taking on the challenge of the OLD Wheelersburg
Raceway dominator. Unfortunately, the battle never materialized
as Spillman took himself out by clipping an infield tire and
spinning on the lap 6 restart handing the lead to track
promoter, Aaron Fry.
On the restart, the running order was Fry, John Roush, Fox,
Uhrig, and Rob Roush running in the top 5. But back in the pack,
it was the "Mis0" of Sean Lehman and the 51 of Spillman who were
charging to the front. Uhrig also appeared to be a man on a
mission as he picked off Fox and Roush to move to the runner-up
spot. It rapidly became evident that the drying Lunbeck surface
was changing the complexion of the race as Fry, who at one point
had a 3/4 lap lead, now found himself on a kart resembling Paris
Hilton.......so loose you could hardly stand it!! The #13 of
Uhrig had a kart that seemed to get better as the track got
dusty!
Unfortunately, John Roush's great run came to an end on the #4
kart after leading early and running in the top 3 all day. Then
young gun Josh Fox lost a left front wheel late in the race also
eliminating him from competition. As the laps wound down, Uhrig
appeared to be the fastest kart on the track, but Aaron Fry, who
has driven a few races in his career, knew how to make the #33
wider and was able to fend off the challenges of the Lunbeck
Gentleman to claim his first ever win on his own track and to be
the first LKA driver to win from the back row. Sean Lehman had
one of the best runs of his LKA career by charging back up to
run 3rd and fend off the late race challenges of Jason Spillman
who was 4th. Rob Roush, Scott Salyers, Tyler Roush, and John
Wayne Roush rounded out the 8 finishers.
In victory lane, Fry was quick to thank kart owner Lee Glatting
for providing him such a great kart. "Lee's a great guy and his
mechanic Deuce really knows how to turn the wrenches" stated
Fry, who went on to say, "I'm just a big hairy American winning
machine." He was also quick to thank Troy Uhrig for the clean
challenges over the closing laps. "I could feel him back there,
that's for sure. But I know Troy, and unless its the county
fair, he isn't going to hit you hard enough to get you out of
shape too awful bad" stated Fry.
The next event for the LKA will be this Saturday, May 2nd at
noon with the rescheduled "Buckeye Spring Classic" which was
rained out earlier this season. With hot laps at noon and time
trials at 12:30 and the WFO racing action beginning at 1 pm.
This will be the final Saturday race until October. After May
2nd, racing action will move to Thursday nights when the LKA
brings back Thursday Night Thunder!!!
Hope to see everyone Saturday!!!
Harding charges to Cottontail Classic Checkers
After a night of heavy rain, Lunbeck Speedway track officials
worked diligently to get the World's Fastest 1/19th mile oval in
shape for the 2nd running of the Pete Cottontail Classic. Less
than an hour before race time, most in attendence thought there
was no way that the speed deamons of the LKA would ever see
action on Southern ohio's most popular dirt track.
After a brief delay, the LKA gladiators took the the high banks
with rooster tails of clay eminating from the high hosrepowered
speed chariots! Twelve karts were on hand, and due to the late
start, heat races were lined up by the pill draw.
Heat race #1 saw Sean "Miso" Lehman and Scott "Ironman" Salyers
bringing the field to green. Lehman got to the early lead, but
5th starting Phil Harding drove like a man posessed as he
rocketed to the front. He quickly moved to 2nd, then engaged
Lehman in a battle of epic proportions on the point. Harding got
a nose under Lehman entering turn 3 and that was all it took as
he cruised on to the win, followed by Lehman, Ty Roush, Scott
Salyers, Rob Roush, and John Roush Sr.
The 2nd heat saw Lee "The Rim Rider" Glatting on the pole
alongside the #51 of opening day winner Jason Spillman. Glatting
was making his debut as a "hired gun" driving the #18 kart owned
by Elizabeth Fry. Glatting got out to the early lead with
Spillman and "The Lunbeck Gentleman", Troy Uhrig, in close
pursuit. Meanwhile, back in the pack, Todd George and John Roush
Jr got together and both fell a half lap behind the front trio.
Spillman hounded Glatting for the lead as George put on a
furious drive to reel in the front 3 but time ran out and the
race ended just as he caught the leaders. After leading most of
the heat, Glatting went just a little wide off turn 4 and
Spillman had the daylight he needed to scoot through for the
win. Glatting held on to 2nd with Uhrig, George, and Roush Jr
completing the finish.
The dash was next up and it saw the top 3 from each heat lined
straight up from their heat finish. The overflow crowd was eager
to see the 2 impressive heat winners throw down on the point at
the start of the 6 lap dash. Phil Harding used his inside
position to his advantage and rocketed around the oval for 6
quick laps to post the victory over Spillman, Glatting, Ty
Roush, Lehman, and Uhrig.
The B-Main event saw 5 karts on the grid for a 10 lap event that
would line up rowns 4 through 6 of the A-Main. Scott Salyers and
Todd George brought the field to green and the pair put on quite
a show, much to the delight of the rowdy Lunbeck spectators.
Salyers was able to hold off his nemesis for the win and Conley
fans got to celebrate another 71 victory over a Boggs fan. John
Roush Jr ran 3rd with John Roush Sr and Rob Roush failing to
finish with mechanical issues.
Finally, the biggest sporting event in the country on Easter
Weekend was ready to go. The 2nd annual Pete Cottontail Classic
was lined up on the frontstretch 11 karts strong. The pill draw
this week was a "4" inverting the top 4 finish from the dash.
After driver introductions, the combatants boarded their speed
machines and set off for battle. Tyler "The Monster" Roush and
Lee "The Rim Rider" Glatting brought the field to green and Ty
Roush, still seeking his first LKA feature win, shot to the
lead, and 3rd starting Jason Spillman hooked to his rear bumper
and followed him to 2nd place with Glatting settling into 3rd
and "Miso" Sean Lehman was able to get by Phil Harding for the
4th spot in the early stages.
An early caution on lap # 2 took out John Roush Sr in the #4
kart, but when the field went back to green, Phil Harding began
his methodical charge to the front, first picking off Lehman to
claim 4th. By lap #9, Harding was able to get by Glatting for
the 3rd spot. Caution #2 flew on lap 12 for the spun kart of
Sean Lehman. A lap later, caution #3 came out for the spun kart
of Scott Salyers who was having another spirited battle with
Todd George.
On lap #18, Harding was able to dispatch of Spillman to claim
the runner-up spot, then the 4th caution of the day flew on lap
#21 for an errant infield tire knocked out onto the track. This
set up a great battle on the point between race long leader
Tyler Roush and Phil "Hard Chargin" Harding. A lap later,
Salyers and Lehman tangled in turn 1, eliminating Lehman from
competition. The next re-start was waved off and one driver was
warned about rough driving! The next restart was much better,
and Roush continued to show the way. The 6th caution flew on lap
#25 as Todd George came to a stop on the frontstretch. Rob Roush
brought out caution #7 with a spin off turn 4 setting up a 4 lap
dash to the finish.
The green flag was in the air as the karts started lap #27 with
Tyler Roush ever so close to his first career LKA feature win,
but the rough turn #2 surface may have contributed as the #33
Monster Energy Drink entry lost its chain, leaving Roush just
short once again and opening the door for Phil Harding who led
the final 3 circuits to claim the win. Jason Spillman finished
2nd with Troy Uhrig quietly sneaking up into 3rd. Scott Salyers,
Tyler Roush, John Roush Jr and Rob Roush completed the top 7,
all of which were still running at the finish.
Elizabeth Roush scored the win over a 4 kart field in the
increasingly popular powder puff race. Updated LKA points will
be released Sunday night.
The next LKA event will be right back here at Lunbeck Speedway
in 2 weeks on Saturday, April 25th as the LKA presents their
version of the Colossal known as "The Miniscule". Chillicothe,
Ohio's Todd George scored his first career win in last years
event. Hot Laps will begin at noon with time trials at 12:30 and
racing action at 1 pm.
A.P Wire Story
* * * For Immediate Release * * *
Although the temperature at Lunbeck Speedway today was 38
degrees, the calendar says its spring, and that means its time
for the one and only, Pete Cottontail Classic. Most of the world
celebrates the resurrection of Christ with colored eggs and a
giant rabbit......and no one understands the correlation between
those things. But EVERYONE agrees that its time for the
Cottontail Classic as Lunbeck!!
Last years event saw two time LKA champion Keith Jones picking
up the win narrowly edging Sean "Miso" Lehman who had set fast
time that day. Wheelersburg, Ohio's Jason Spillman will lead the
LKA contenders into the event with the points lead, after scoring
the win over a 15 kart opening day field.
Another large field of karts is expected and hot laps will begin
at noon. Time trials will commence at 12:30 with heat races
beginning at 1 pm. Lunbeck Speedway management has increased the
size of the pit area and construction on the grandstands is
still going on.
Hope to see everyone Saturday!!!

Jones claims "Thank God George Bush
is Gone 30"
It's only been a few days since the election of Barrack
Obama, and it first appeared the republicans were right. The
whole world began falling apart at Lunbeck Speedway on
Saturday as there was more mayhem than anyone could keep up
with. By the end of the day, 2 karts would be upside down,
tempers would flare between political parties, but in the
end, Obama would already bring "change" to the world.
The day started off with Keith Jones setting fast time at
7.53 narrowly edging Tyler Bogue who set a 7.56 clocking
over the 11 kart field. It didn't take long for the carnage
to begin and everyone knew it was going to be a weird day
when Scott Salyers and John Roush tangled at the start of
heat 1 and the karts became tangled in a way most had never
before seen. After carefullyy extricating the drivers,
rescue crews worked diligently to free the 2 karts. Salyers
mount suffered sever damge and Roush managed to rejoin the
race. Both drivers narrowly escaped injury in the harrowing
ordeal!
The "Lunbeck Rim Rider", Lee Glatting blitzed to the early
lead of heat 1 but the "Lunbeck Legend" Keith Jones used the
high side of the track to come from 4th and give Glatting a
run for the point. With only the top 2 transferring to the "Obama
dash for chage" Jones showed patience and settled for the
runner-up spot. Glatting came home the winner with Jones,
Dan Lewis, Troy Uhrig and John Roush following.
In heat 2, Josh Fox and Shaun Lewis brought the field to
green, but deep in the pack, Tyler "The Monster" Roush was
charging from the tail. In a spectacular display, Roush
split karts coming to the front and even hopped over a kart
on the frontstretch during his relentless charge. Jason
Roush had come from 3rd to the lead and Tyler Roush could
not quite run him down, but hung on for 2nd and a trip to
the "Obama dash". Tyler Bogue wound up 3rd, followed by Josh
Fox and Shaun Lewis.
Next up was the "Obama dash for change". All we have heard
all campaign long was how Barrack was going to bring
"change" to the country. Well, he hasn't even taken office
yet, and already the change was seen at Lunbeck Speedway as
the promoter and many fans emptied their car consoles and
donated a pile of "change" to the dash winner. Wheelersburg,
Ohio driver Tyler Roush led all 5 laps from the pole and
picked up $22.05 in quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.
The Joe Biden B-Main event was won by Tyler Bogue from the
pole and he never looked back. Dan Lewis held the 2nd spot
for most of the event, but his son, Shaun Lewis closed in
3rd and the father /son duo put on quite a display for
several laps, but Shaun finally put the ol slide job on dad
off turn 2 to claim the runner-up spot with dad settling for
3rd, followed by Troy Uhrig, Josh Fox, and John Roush.
Next up was the 30 lap A-Main. Lunbeck Speedway would usher
in a new era in the U.S.A. as the green flag flew on the
"Thank God George Bush is Gone 30". Lee Glatting would share
the front row with Keith Jones as Jason Roush and Ty Roush
would occupy row 2. Row 3 saw Tyler Bogue and Shaun Lewis,
row 4 was Dan Lewis and Troy Uhrig, the 5th row was Josh Fox
and John Roush and starting shotgun on the field with hasty
repairs, was Scott Salyers.
The initial start was waved off when Dan Lewis and Josh Fox
got tangled on the backstretch. On the 2nd attempt to get
the race started, all hell broke loose at Lunbeck and
republicans everywhere were saying, "We told you this would
happen". Ty Roush and Keith Jones tangled on the
frontstretch with Roush slamming the frontstretch wall
nearly head on and Jones sliding back acroos the track
collecting Shaun Lewis. Lewis began a nasty barrell roll as
several more karts piled in from behind including Josh Fox
and John Roush. Miraculously, no one was seriously injured,
but several drivers had to change pants for the restart, and
Shaun Lewis narrowly escaped death on the World's Fastest
1/19th mile dirt oval! Undaunted, Lewis hopped on his dad's
71 and restarted from the tail of the field!
When the race finally got underway, Lee Glatting showed the
way with Keith Jones dogging him for the spot. A caution
would fly on lap 7 when Josh Fox spun off turn 2. On a
restart attempt, Scott Salyers kart stalled and the firled
had to check up. As they did, the 4 of John Roush rode up
and over a wheel on the 15 of Josh Fox and Roush wound up on
his top! This was the first time Lunbeck ever had 2 karts
upside down in a single day!! Lunbeck racer, Todd George,
was quick to the rescue and helped Roush escape without
injury!!
As the laps wound down, Jones was right there on Glatting
giving him no margin for error. At the halfway mark, it was
Glatting, Jones, Jason Roush, Bogue, Shaun Lewis, Fox, Ty
Roush and Salyers. Onlap 16 the leaders caught the lappped
kart of Salyers entering turn 1. Glatting attempted to go
high while Jone stayed content to run low and foolow the
ailing 71c. Jones made the right move pinning Glatting
behind the slower kart on the backstretch, then motoring on
to a lead he would never relinquish.
A few laps later, Jason Roush would suffer the same fate as
Ty Bogue slipped by in traffic for the 3rd spot with Shaun
Lewis in tow. Bogue then ran down Lee Glatting and passed
for the runner-up spot!! Shaun Lewis also engaged Glatting
in a torrid battle for 3rd that saw the pair swap the 3rd
spot 11 times over the final 7 laps. Bogue ran down Keith
Jones, but Jones held on for the win over a fast closing Ty
Bogue in 2nd. Glatting narrowly edged Shaun Lewis for 3rd
and Josh Fox rounded out the top 5. The rest of the rundown
was Ty Roush, Scott Salyers, John Roush, Jason Roush, Trou
Uhrig and Dan Lewis.
When the action was finally over, everyone appeared to be
relatively unhurt, but "World's Wildest Videos" was en route
to the track for their next episode. Following all this
action, Lunbeck Speedway management is considering raising
general admission from "free" to $20. Race fans in
attendance said they had never seen such action all season
long!!!
The next event will be the final LKA show of 2008. Saturday,
Novemebr 22nd will be the 2nd annual "Twin Turkey Shootout"
at Lunbeck Speedway. The LKA will run their regular show,
but the A-main will be 20 laps. Then, the field will be
inverted and a second 20 lap feature will be run. So double
features will mean double the excitement and the cost of
admission is STILL the best value in racing in the country
as general admission is free and pit passes are FREE.
The LKA award banquet has been set for Friday night,
December 12th at 7:00 pm. It will be held at the Stardust
Tavern and Pizza loacted a 1/4 mile from the track. There
will be a rules meeting for 2009 at 6:00 pm. All drivers
from 2008 and drivers planning to run in 2009 are encouraged
to attend. We will vote on some of the proposed rule
amendments. The top 10 in points will receive their awards
at 7:00 and pizza will be served at 8:00.
See you all in 2 weeks!!!!

Keith Jones claims the "Vinton
Vendetta"
A beautiful, sunny day greeted the LKA Sunday at Vinton
Raceway and an outstanding field of 15 karts signed in for
the days events. Leading Rookie of the Year candidate, Troy
Uhrig, set the pace in time trials with a 12.07 clocking
narrowly edging LKA newcomer Ed Richendollar in the 327 kart
who turned a 12.09 on the wicked fast D-shaped track.
Next up were heat races where the 1st 4 in each race were
inverted from time trials with the top 3 finishers advancing
to the dash. Heat 1 saw 8 karts come to green led by Tyler
Roush and Keith Jones. However, the 112 of David Seitz was
the kart on the move as he quickly dispatched of Jones and
set his sights on race leader Ty Roush. However, the tricky
Vinton backstretch saw Seitz get a little sideways, dropping
back to fourth. This let fast timer Troy Uhrig slip into the
final transfer spot as he, Roush and Jones put on a great
battle for the top 3 spots. At the wire, it was Roush,
followed by Jones, Uhrig, Seitz, then Kris Jones who came
from the tail, Tyler Bogue, Shaun Lewis and Sean Lehman.
The 2nd heat race was paced by the LKA rim rider, Lee
Glatting along with the 76 of Georgia transplant Brian Lee.
Heartbreak though for 2nd quick qualifier Ed Richendollar,
as mechanical issues would sideline him before the race even
started. The race for the top spot was heated early on as
Lee Glatting and Brian Lee battled furiously for the top
spot and Dan Lewis charged from his 6th starting spot to
join the fracas. Brian Lee slipped by Glatting for the lead
and Glatting would not disappoint his fans as he and fellow
team member Sean Lehman were the only karts who continually
tested the high line. Unfortunately, on this day, the high
line was not there and mini sprint champion Dan Lewis
motored by to take the runner-up spot. At the stripe, it was
Lee, followed by Lewis, Glatting, then Scott Salyers, John
Roush, and Davey Seitz Jr.
Next up was the dash for karts who finished in the top 3 of
the 2 heat races. The dash was lined up straight up using
the drivers time trials. This put Troy Uhrig on the pole
alongside Keith Jones. Uhrig blasted to the lead of the 5
lap dash and would never look back. Tyler Roush charged from
4th to the runner-up spot followed by Brian Lee, Keith
Jones, Lee Glatting and Dan Lewis.
The B-Main event for drivers finishing 4 thru 8 in the
heats, was up next. The 327 of Richendollar was again unable
to make the call, putting Scott Salyers on the pole
alongside David Seitz in the 112. Seitz cruised to a
convincing victory, but tyler Bogue and teammate Kris Jones
put on impressive run of their own as Bogue nailed down the
runner-up spot and Kris Jones came from the tail to secure
4th. At the finish, it was Seitz, followed by Bogue, Shaun
Lewis, Kris Jones, Sean Lehman, Scott Salyers, John Roush,
and Davey Seitz Jr.
The A-Main was next and the standing room only Vinton crowd
was wide-eyed in amazement as 15 karts thundered to starter
Mike May's green flag. Troy Uhrig and Tyler Roush led the
field to the start and after one caution and complete
restart, the field ran the first 8 laps caution free with
Roush showing the way early. The early mover was 7th
starting David Seitz who was up to 3rd by the completion of
lap 2 and he managed to overtake Brain Lee for 2nd on lap 3.
However, Lee, Uhrig, and Dan Lewis were not about to let
Seitz get away, and those 4 engaged in a torrid battle for
the runner-up spot and they let Tyler Roush open up a
commanding early lead.
By the completion of lap 7, Kris Jones had charged from 10th
to join the battle at the front. Meanwhile, Scott Salyers
and Ty Bogue tangled entering turn 1 bringing out the
caution just as top 5 runners Dan Lewis and David Seitz
tangled in turn 4. The caution was already out for the
Salyers/Bogue tangle, so Lewis and Seitz got their spots
back.
Back under green, Roush continued to lead as Seitz and Kris
Jones trailed in hot pursuit. Another caution for Sean
Lehman losing a chain would slow the pace for a moment,
sending the popular "mis0" to the tail of the field. As the
field came to complete lap 11, Seitz and Kris Jones tangled
between turn 3 and 4 bringing out another caution. The 5th
caution of the race flew on lap 12 for an incident involving
Lee Glatting and John Roush.
With only 3 laps remaining, the Vinton Vendetta would live
up to its name, and the Vinton crowd, who had been on their
feet the whole race, really got their money's worth. Tyler
Roush had led from the start, but David Seitz had been all
over him through the middle stages. Seitz had tried Roush
repeatedly, but spun on lap 13 relegating him to the tail.
This put veteran racer Dan Lewis in the catbird seat with a
2 lap shootout remaining.
As the green flag flew, Seitz unleashed a furious charge
from the back and Keith Jones sat in 3rd and watched things
unfold. Lewis decided it was time to throw drown with Roush
and the 2 tangled entering turn 1 crashing violently up the
turn 1 banking sending Vinton fans scurrying for shelter
faster than a Cuban in a Hurricane. Both karts involved came
to a stop, so both were sent to the rear, but Lewis was too
damaged to continue.
With the final green flag waving, Keith Jones found himself
on the point after falling as far back as 10th throughout
the early stages of the race. Jones patiently worked his way
back through the field and was in command over the final
circuits to claim the win as Mike May's double checkers flew
mercifully over the field with karts still spinning on the
last lap.
When the dust settled, Jones had claimed the win and David
Seitz had motored from the tail back to 2nd in only 3 laps.
Tyler Bogue drove a great race and was steady all day to
claim 3rd spot and fast timer Troy Uhrig soldiered hom 4th
while dragging a nerf bar over the final few circuits. The
Lunbeck Ironman, Scott Salyers, had to come from the tail
late to finish 5th.
Rounding out the top 10 were Tyler Roush, John Roush, Sean
Lehman, Shaun Lewis and Dan Lewis.
The LKA would like to thank Vinton Raceway for having us and
thanks to all the drivers who made the tow. The final 2 LKA
events will be back at Lunbeck Speedway this Saturday,
November 8th and Saturday November 22nd.

The Lunbeck IronMan Scott Salyers
gets Halloween Havoc 30 win at Lunbeck Speedway
The Kart Count was down but the fan count was up and
everyone was excited to see some WFO Dirt Slinging Action at
Worlds Fastest 1/19th mile which would be very tacky and Fast
for the day!Turns 1 and 2 were really sloppy to start the day
but the Karters and Track Management worked on it hadr and got
it race ready by 1pm.
A Pill draw would be used as setting the 2 Heat
Lineups, with the 1st heat started straight up and the 2nd Heat
would be inverted.Heat 1would have Josh Fox on the Pole with
Troy Uhrig on the outside, followed by the Lunbeck Ironman on
the inside of the 2nd row with Tyler"Monster"Roush on the
outside of Row 2 and starting on the Tail would be
Jon"Uncle"Roush.Fox would jump out to the early lead, bringing
the Lunbeck Ironman along with him as Uhrig and Both Roushes
were slicing and dicing for the 3rd spot.Fox would have about
a 2 Kart length lead on Salyers as they came up on the abttle
for 3rd,4th and 5th!!Fox would take the win over salyers 2
Kart Lengths back and Tyler Roush would get into his uncle on
the 3rd turn of the last lap and Uhrig would get by for 3rd
with Jon Roush credited with 4th and Tyler Roush a 5th place
finish.
The 2nd Heat would row out with Jon Roush on the Pole
followed by Tyler Roush on the Outside Pole, followed by
Salyers starting 3rd again,Troy Uhrig starting 4th and Josh
Fox bringing up the rear.Salyers would fall in behind Jon
Roush with Tyler Roush run side by side with them on the
Outside,Salyers got by Jon Roush going into 3 and Brought
Tyler along with him and Tyler Roush got a run on the outside
going down the backstretch and he had a Half a Kart lead over
Salyers and tried to cut down in front of him and Salyers
would spin the 33 Kart out as Salyers ran out of Inside
running room and Roush had to go to the tail for stopping on
the Track.Salyers would then pull out to the lead as Fox,Uncle
Roush,Uhrig and Tyler Roush were battling 2 wide for spots 2
thru 5.Salyers started pulling away and with 2 to go he was
catching the back of the pack,When the white Flag flew Salyers
was about 4 Kart Lengths behind 2nd thru 5th and as that group
came out of turn 2 they all got a little squirrely and Salyers
would pass 2 Karts on the Outside of turns 3 and 4 and be
right on the tail of the 2nd and 3rd place Karts!!The Buzz
could be felt as the fans were all talking about how Salyers
had almost alpped the field ina 10 lap heat race!!
Salyers had Earlier won the Halloween Costume with his
AWESOME Ironman Costume that went hand in hand with his
Lunbeck Ironman Nickname, that the fans loved and the only
other Contestants were a Young Josh Fox who was dressed up
like a Fairy and finsihed 2nd in the voting and Troy Uhrig who
was dressed up identically to Tyler"Monster"Roush and had a
MONSTER drink to prove it!!So since Salyers had won the
contest and ,he was guaranteed the pole no matter what invert
pill was DRAWN!!A 4 was drawn,so this made the Lineup being
the Lunbeck Ironman Scott Salyers on the pole, followed by
Tyler"Monster"Roush(The Real one),Jon"Uncle" Roush, Josh Fox
and Troy Uhrig.
Salyers took the ealr lead in the feature and the Monster
had retired early with mechanical problems and Josh Fox was a
few Kart lengths behind at the halfway point with Troy Uhrig
about a half a track behind as he had had trouble getting
around Uncle Roush and after doing so,Uncle Roush pulled off
with mechanical problems.Troy Uhrig started reeeling in the
top 2 as Fox was pressuring Salyers and bumping him every so
often, with the 5 to go given the top 3 were nose to tail and
Uhrig got by Fox and had a run off the bottom of turn 2 and
got into Salyers and ended up on top of Salyers Kart and Fox
would get collected as all 3 Karts had come to a stop!!So
track officials went with the No Stop Rule and every kart
would get their spot back!Salyers was pressured by Uhrig the
last 5 Laps but held him off for the Popular win with Uhrig
one Kart length behind followed by Josh Fox 1 Kart length
behind.
Salyers would say after the race that he needs an offseason
workout program as hes only good for about 20 laps before the
Arms turn to Jelly and he loses it at the end,but was happy to
hold off Uhrig and Fox for the win!!
Uhrig was on the move after the halfway race and he had made
up a half a lap in 9 laps and passed Fox and the racing
incident with Salyers ended his good run as Salyers would say
later that the Caution helped him get his arms back a little
and to be able to get up on the wheel!!Of course, being the
sportsman that he is Uhrig was apologizing profusely over and
over to Salyers and there were no hard feelings as thats
racing at the Lunbeck Bullring.
But the fans were even in for a Bigger Treat!!The Kart
Drivers Volunteered their Karts for some special Races!!The
Ladies would get to race in a Powder Puff Race. Sue Roush
would take her sons 33 Kart to Victory Lane over Maria Scaefer
in the 71C,followed by Debbie Collins in the 4 and Janelle
Hysell would be 1 lap down in the 13 Kart.Sue Roush would tell
son,Tyler Roush, that his Kart was finally in Victory lane
LOL!!
The Rookie Racers would then take to the Track ,with
Flagman ,Mike May driving the 13 Kart to Victory over the 15
of Chris Stanley, the 4 of John Roush, the 71c of Chris Bice and
the 33 of Bub Roush.
Lunbeck Speedway was AWESOME today as it was still tacky
after all that racing!!The Fans giot to participate in the fun
and everyone had a GREAT time for free!!So,Lunbeck Speedway
encourages all race fans to come out and join us for the final
2 races on the schedule coming up on Saturday November 8th

Keith Jones wins 2nd Straight DTWK
at Lunbeck Speedway
Keith Jones continued his dominating performance of the
Prestigious DTWK at Lunbeck Speedway as he took his 2nd
straight win in the annual event!!The day started out with
Qualifying and Jones would be the 1st one out.He would set a
new track record with a time of 7.98 seconds at the 1/19th
mile oval. But that wouldnt stand for long as Troy Uhrig would
be next out and set a new record at 7.96 seconds!!The next
Kart out would be the 71c in his Retro Conley Racing Paint
Scheme of the Lunbeck Ironman,Scott Salyers, and he would
again set a new track record with a time of 7.81 seconds and
he was celebrating with his many fans, but that would not stand
long wither as the previous race winner of the Dottie Lucas
Memorial,Kyle Jones would be next up!!The Stormtrooper would
set a new track record of 7.61!!!The track was unbelievably
fast and all these broken records would show this!!
The 2nd round of qualifying would have every Kart have an
even faster lap!!Troy Uhrig would set a time of 7.73,followed
by Tyler Bogue, who ran a 7.76.Tyler'Monster" Roush would then
get 2nd quick on the day with a time of 7.71!Kyle Jones would
then Lower his fast time and set another Track record as he
ran a 7.46!!Salyers would then come out and run a 7.78 which
was faster than his previous lap and yet he dropped from 2nd
in the 1st round to 5th overall!!Then the Lunbeck Legend,Keith
Jones would come back out and he would lower his time to
7.93,but that would make him last!!After qualifying was done
and one Kart didnt take time cause of Mechanical
difficulties, every Kart had beaten the previous track record
of 8.03!!The track record would be borken a total of 5 times
with the 4 times ina row in the 1st round!!So the fans were
already blessed with a good fast track and everyone dying to
bring home the prestigious DTWK Trophy!!
The format would be to be run 2 Heat Races with the 1st one
straight up from Qualifying and 2nd one inverted from
Qualifying!Heat points would be used to set the Lineup for the
A-Main with the most points starting on the front and so
on,but there was still a possibilty of an invert with the
famous Lunbeck Invert.
The 1st Heat would be won by Kyle Jones over Tyler Roush
and 5th starting Scott Salyers coming up to 3rd,followed by
Keith Jones,Tyler Bogue,Troy Uhrig and the 4 Kart of Tyler
Roush's Uncle.
The 2nd heat would be won by Keith Jones over Salyers,
Tyler Bogue,Troy Uhrig,Tyler Roush,Kyle Jones and the 4 Kart
of Uncle Roush.
The Heat points would show Keith Jones and Scott Salyers
tied with 5 each! But Jones would get the number 1 spot
courtesy of his Heat win.Kyle Jones and ROush would tie with 7
Points, but Jones would get the 3rd spot before the
invert, because of his Heat win.Uhrig and Bogue would tie with
10 points but Uhrig would get the spot for the better heat
finish, followed by Bogue and Uncle Roush!
Then it was time for the invert that Lunbeck Speedway
always does before the feature event and 2 zeroes,2 4's and 1
6 was put in a hat for the invert.Keith Jones would pull out a
4 and the field would be set with Tyler Roush on the Pole
Followed Kyle Jones,Scott Salyers,Keith Jones,Troy Uhrig,Tyler
Bogue andUncle Roush.
The Monster Tyler Roush would jump out to the early lead as
Salyers and Kyle Jones would battle for the 2nd spot with
Jones on the outside and Salyers on the inside. Jones would
finally take the 2nd spot after about 3 laps of side by side
racing and start stracking down Roush with Salyers close
behind followed by Keith Jones Tyler Bogue ,Troy Uhrig and
Uncle Roush. About 20 laps in the Stormtrooper would get
halfway up to the inside of Roush and would cut down and get
into Jones and Jones would spin to a stop and track officials
deemed it as a racing deal and an upset Jones would go to the
tail!!
This made the running order,Roush,Salyers, Keith Jones, Tyler
Bogue,Troy Uhrig,Kyle Jones, and Uncle Roush a lap down.
Salyers would try to get under Roush on the restart and
catch the rut in turn 2 and his steering wheel would jerk from
his hand.He was going to get back in line on the tail and then
seen that his steering column bushings had broke and the Metal
bars connecting the steering wheel to the frame were
broken!!So a dissappointed Salyers and his many fans were done
for the day!
This made the running order,Roush,Keith Jones ,Bogue, Uhrig,
and Kyle Jones the last Kart running as Uncle Roush would pull
off on the same lap as Salyers. The Lunbeck Legend would then
start working on Rpush and hound him lap after lap!!Jones
would finally complet the pass getting under Roush in turn 3
who went way high coming out of 4,which would allow Bogue and
Uhrig to get by also!!Roush was trying to get his Kart
straight and would get into Jones past the falgstand and Kyle
would come to a stop in turn 1 and bring out another
caution. The running order would be Keith Jones, Bogue,
Uhrig,Roush, and Kyle Jones. Kyle Jones would start making his
run to the front as he picked off Roush for 4th and a couple
laps later Uhrig for 3rd. Not soon after Jones got to 3rd,
Roush would come to a stop in turn 4 with a flat tire and
would be done for the day.
The running order was now Keith Jones,Bogue, Kyle Jones,
and Troy Uhrig.Kyle Jones was all over Bogue but couldnt
complete the pass and Keith Jones would pull away for his
straight DTWK win as Bogue would come home 2nd with Kyle Jones
3rd,Troy Uhrig 4th, Tyler Roush 5th,Scott Salyers 6th and
Uncle Roush 7th.
Heres the final rundown:
Finish:-Driver(Starting spot):
1.x-Keith Jones(4th)
2.17-Tyler Bogue(5th)
3.85-Kyle Jones(2nd)
4.13-Troy Uhrig(6th)
5.33-Tyler Roush(1st)
6.71c-Scott Salyers(3rd)
7.4-Uncle Roush(7th)
Notes:The 71c Kart of the Lunbeck Ironman was voted Best
Looking Kart by the many fans in attendance ,as they loved the
Conley racing retro look.
The Lunbeck legend Keith Jones would extend his point lead
with his 5th Feature win.
Of the 15 Features ran at Lunbeck Speedway, there have been
10 different winners.
Salyers had to have his Kart welded back together and he got
it fixed Sunday morning with the help of a new Lunbeck
Fan,Mike Colopy, who drivers a Bomber at KC Raceway and
Brushcreek!!Salyers says Colopy is his new Favorite Bomber
driver as he didnt charge Salyers a thing to weld the Kart
back together!
Troy Uhrig would extend his Rookie of the year lead on
Tyler Roush as only half the finishes will count towards that! |
